The Chess Learning Center suggests several chess items your young chess player should own:

1. Regulation Chessboard and Chess Set

   The first item your young chess player needs is a tournament-sized chessboard and chess pieces (technically the King and pawns are not pieces.)  Use the standard size (3-½'' to 4" King), solid plastic set in the traditional Staunton design. Stay away from the fancy glass, metal, wood or hypermodern chess sets that are not of the Staunton design.  The inexpensive, hollow plastic pieces easily break and are simply less pleasant to handle than solid plastic pieces.

Vinyl Roll-up Chessboard & Chess Set The chessboard should be proportioned to your pieces.  Vinyl roll-up boards tournament-sized boards (2'' to 2½'' squares) are excellent.  The red and black cardboard boards wear out too fast.   Most of the vinyl roll-up boards tournament-sized boards have algebraic notation on the sides to assist the student in learning chess notation and following my class notes.  Young chess players are rough on equipment, so it’s important to have sets that are as “kid proof” as possible. You can further protect chess pieces by placing them in a vinyl bag.  One gallon baggies work well.
