The Chess Learning Center suggests several chess items your young chess player should own:

2. Chess Notation Scorebooks
   A notation scorebook is absolutely essential for any developing chess player. Each student is encouraged to purchase a scorebook in which to keep a complete record of his or her games.

   If students notate their games, a Chess Learn instructor will personally review the key games they played.  It is essential to be able to go over past games to identify errors and determine which concepts require a better understanding.  Improvements in chess play can only take place if the instructor knows where the problems are. The scorebook should contain at least one diagram on the back of each page for adjournments, with ample space for notes.
